Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces have claimed control of the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait and announced the recapture of a nearby airport in Dhubab, a coastal area in Taiz governorate, media reported on Monday.
Brigadier General Majid al-Nuzaili said in posts on X that government troops had secured the airport and strengthened their presence across the surrounding area.
He said several Houthi fighters fled by boat after coming under siege. The government forces had earlier announced that they captured the Dhubab district following what they described as a decisive operation against the Houthis.
Meanwhile, Yemen’s armed forces said on Monday that they had launched a “strategic offensive” in the capital, Sanaa.
The Houthis continue to control Sanaa and large parts of northwestern Yemen, a densely populated region of the country.
