Iran Sets Islamabad MoU Conditions for Strait of Hormuz Reopening

Iran has said the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until seven conditions agreed under an interim understanding with the United States are fulfilled, Iranian media reported on Sunday.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran had recently received Washington’s response to its diplomatic proposal through a mediator, but warned that Iran would not accept prolonged negotiations or unilateral demands.

“The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran is completely clear and firm,” Ghalibaf was quoted as saying by Nournews. He added that the strait would not be reopened until Iran’s seven conditions, outlined in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, were met.

His remarks came days after Tehran received the US response, amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve outstanding issues between the two sides.

Meanwhile, Iran’s army is set to launch a programme to provide military training to civilian volunteers as part of preparations for national defence.

Army Deputy for Training and Education Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Alian-Nejad said the programme would begin Sunday at three facilities in Tehran.

According to Iranian media reports, personnel from all four army branches will be deployed at designated “field garrison” locations to train the volunteers.

The first stage will focus on basic military training, while participants will later be offered more advanced courses, Alian-Nejad said.
