ISLAMABAD – Motorists could be in for another round of relief as the government is expected to lower petrol prices from September 29, following a three-day delay in the latest petroleum price review.
As per available info, petrol may become cheaper by Rs1.37 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) could see a larger reduction of Rs3.55 per litre. The final rates, however, will depend on the government’s decision on petroleum taxes and other applicable adjustments.
New Petrol Price
The latest confirmed petrol price currently stands at Rs391.30 per litre, after the government raised it by Rs2.02 per litre on September 26. The rate was set to remain in effect through September 28.
Petrol prices have moved sharply during the past 10 days under the country’s newly adopted daily pricing mechanism.
| Date | Petrol price |
|---|---|
| September 19 | Rs389.14/L |
| September 20 | Rs389.14/L |
| September 21 | Rs393.75/L |
| September 22 | Rs393.75/L |
| September 23 | Rs392.05/L |
| September 24 | Rs390.12/L |
| September 25 | Rs389.28/L |
| September 26 | Rs391.30/L |
| September 27 | Rs391.30/L |
| September 28 | Rs391.30/L |
According to the available price history, petrol touched a 10-day high of Rs393.75 per litre on September 21-22, before falling to Rs389.28 and then climbing again to Rs391.30.
From September 19 to September 28, the petrol price increased overall by Rs2.16 per litre, despite several fluctuations during the period.
The expected Rs1.37-per-litre reduction would bring petrol to around Rs389.93 per litre, if the estimate is approved without any additional tax adjustment. However, the figure is not yet final. The government retains the ability to modify petroleum taxes, meaning the final price could differ from the preliminary estimate.
The daily pricing mechanism was introduced to allow changes in international oil prices to be reflected more quickly in domestic fuel rates. The latest revision has also been linked to volatility in international oil markets.
