The Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Scheme will be launched nationwide at 11:59pm on September 16, with the government completing arrangements for its implementation across the country, the deputy prime minister’s office said on Tuesday.
DPM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting to assess preparations for the nationwide rollout and review administrative arrangements for the scheme.
The initiative, announced by PM Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday, provides a fuel subsidy of Rs100 per litre to owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and other two- and three-wheelers, as well as vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc.
Under the scheme, eligible owners of two- and three-wheelers can avail the subsidy on a monthly allocation of 20 litres, while owners of vehicles up to 800cc will be entitled to the same relief on 30 litres of fuel per month.
Officials informed that the scheme had already been introduced in Islamabad and would be extended to the rest of the country from 11:59 pm on September 16.
Dar directed authorities to keep the registration procedure straightforward and easily accessible so that the maximum number of eligible citizens could benefit from the relief. He also called for an effective public awareness campaign and smooth implementation of the scheme at petrol stations. Elected representatives were asked to help spread information about the initiative and assist people with registration.
The DPM further instructed that volunteers from the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme be deployed to support public outreach and registration efforts.
Separately, Dar presided over the ninth meeting of the National Steering Committee on Fuel Subsidy, where officials reviewed preparations for the nationwide implementation.
According to the statement, registration is currently available across the country through SMS at 9771, while beneficiaries will be able to redeem their fuel tokens from midnight between Wednesday and Thursday.
Dar directed that payments to participating petrol stations be processed within 24 hours through the State Bank of Pakistan. He also instructed provincial authorities to complete outreach activities at the district level to ensure eligible beneficiaries can access the relief without difficulty.
The government introduced the scheme amid a sharp increase in fuel costs linked to renewed conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to major international oil supply routes.
