The Punjab government has introduced body-worn cameras for police personnel in Lahore as part of efforts to enhance accountability, public safety and modernise law enforcement.
The initiative, launched on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, will initially cover Punjab Police, Punjab Highway Patrol, Dolphin Force and traffic wardens. Installation of docking stations at police stations is also underway.
The cameras will be connected to Smart Safe City systems operating in 43 cities, enabling district control rooms to monitor field operations. They feature facial recognition, automatic number-plate detection and emergency threat alerts.
The devices can record audio and video, capture photographs and support calls. Push-to-talk communication will allow officers to contact control rooms, while an SOS button will provide an emergency alert facility.
After each shift, officers will return the cameras to designated docking stations, where recorded footage will be automatically transferred and securely stored.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the system would strengthen police oversight and help reduce corruption, adding that ensuring public safety, particularly for vulnerable groups, was a key measure of the initiative’s success.
She said protecting the lives and property of Punjab’s citizens remained the government’s top priority.
