KARACHI – Sindh government spokesperson Saadia Javed has rejected proposals to divide Sindh into separate administrative units, saying the province is a “red line” for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and that the party has never supported such a move.
Speaking to the media, Javed said the PPP had neither backed nor would ever support the division of Sindh into administrative units.
She argued that Pakistan’s current economic conditions do not support the creation of additional administrative units, citing inflation and the country’s ongoing financial challenges.
“There is inflation and an economic crisis. Where will the funds come from to run more administrative units?” she said.
Javed described the demand for new administrative units as a political stunt by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P). She questioned the performance of federal ministers from the party, asking what they had delivered for their voters.
She said Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal had been in office for two and a half years but had failed to effectively represent his constituents, while also questioning MQM-P Chairman Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui’s record in higher education and development projects.
Reaffirming the PPP’s stance, Javed said Karachi is the capital of Sindh and stressed that the party would not accept any division of the province.
She added that while some people in Punjab support creating additional administrative units, the people of Sindh do not.
Commenting on Karachi’s infrastructure challenges, Javed acknowledged that development work was underway but admitted it was progressing slower than desired. She said residents were facing inconvenience due to construction on University Road and noted that even her own home in Defence had experienced water supply problems.
“There are many issues in Karachi, but we are addressing them. Not all of the city’s problems can be blamed on the current government,” she said, expressing confidence that conditions in Karachi would improve by the end of the year.
On the city’s Red Line Bus Rapid Transit project, Javed said work was progressing rapidly and that the deadline for the mixed-lane section of the corridor is July 31.
