Bulgaria’s parliament on Wednesday approved the government’s proposal to allow the United States military to use one of its air bases in support of operations in the Middle East.
However, several lawmakers voiced concerns that the move could draw Bulgaria into a potential conflict involving Iran.
President Donald Trump’s administration has also faced resistance from some other European Union member states over requests to use their air bases for military operations related to Iran.
The development comes as President Trump has threatened to escalate military action against Iran.
The US government formally requested permission to use the Bulgarian air base on Friday. The proposal was approved by parliament with 136 votes in favour, 13 against, and two members absent.
The agreement was reached after Trump criticised NATO member states for refusing to support the United States in a possible military campaign against Iran.
Under the agreement, Bulgaria has authorised the United States to deploy up to eight KC-135 aerial refuelling aircraft and 250 military personnel at the air base to support operations in the Middle East.
