SYDNEY – Former Australian cricketer David Warner has pleaded guilty to a drink-driving offence after being charged by police earlier this year.
According to media reports, Warner was charged in April after a random roadside breath test in Sydney confirmed he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
During an earlier court hearing in May, Warner’s lawyer told the court that the former opening batter had accepted responsibility for his actions and described the incident as a “foolish mistake.”
Warner was not required to appear in court in person during Wednesday’s hearing, where his legal representative formally entered a guilty plea on his behalf.
The court is scheduled to announce Warner’s sentence on August 18.
Under Australian law, the offence carries penalties that may include a minimum six-month driving disqualification, a fine of up to A$2,200, and a maximum prison sentence of up to nine months, depending on the circumstances of the case.
According to reports, the incident occurred while Warner was in Sydney during a short break from his commitments in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
He was returning home after attending a gathering with friends when he was stopped for a routine breath test, which reportedly returned a positive result, leading to the charge.
