LAHORE – Former Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood has stressed the need to develop high-quality fast bowlers, saying a strong pace attack is essential for success in Test cricket.
Speaking during a cricket discussion programme, Shan Masood said Pakistan’s bowlers often lose their effectiveness on the third and fourth days of a Test match, allowing opposition lower-order batters to score valuable runs.
“To win a Test match, a team has to take 20 wickets, which means the bowling attack must be consistently strong,” he said, adding that producing quality fast bowlers should be a top priority for Pakistan cricket.
Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez also shared his views, warning that an excessive focus on spin bowling could prove harmful to the country’s long-term progress in Test cricket.
Hafeez said pitches should be prepared with a balanced approach that supports the development of both pace and spin bowlers rather than favouring one discipline.
He further emphasized that strengthening the foundation of red-ball cricket would ultimately improve the overall standard of Pakistan cricket and help the national team achieve better results in the longest format of the game.
