ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has achieved a major financial milestone by repaying more than Rs4,722 billion in loans ahead of their scheduled maturity dates, marking the first such achievement in the country’s history.
According to Finance Ministry Adviser Khurram Schehzad, Pakistan has so far cleared around Rs4,722 billion, equivalent to nearly $17 billion, in debt before the due dates.
During the ongoing fiscal year 2025-26, early repayments have reached Rs2,900 billion.

He said early debt repayments in the current fiscal year were 62 percent higher compared with the previous year. The repaid amount included 51 percent loans from the State Bank of Pakistan and 49 percent from other financial institutions.
Schehzad added that Pakistan’s debt-to-GDP ratio has declined from 75 percent to around 68.5 percent, reflecting improved debt management and strengthening financial stability.
