LAHORE – National Institute of Technology (NIT), powered by Arizona State University, celebrated the 250th anniversary of the United States’ Independence with a vibrant ceremony in Lahore, reaffirming the growing educational partnership between Pakistan and the United States. The event brought together students, faculty, parents, and distinguished guests, while also marking a major milestone with the launch of NIT’s Future Innovators Scholarship (FIS), under which 250 talented students will receive fully funded education.
US Consul General in Lahore, Stetson Sanders, attended the ceremony as the chief guest and praised NIT for its commitment to innovation, academic excellence, and youth empowerment. Opening his remarks with “Assalamu Alaikum,” Sanders thanked NIT Chancellor Shahzeb Awan for hosting the celebrations and said every visit to the institute reinforces his confidence in Pakistan’s future.
“It is an honor to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary here at NIT,” Sanders said, describing the institute as a center of creativity, innovation, and educational excellence. He noted that the occasion celebrated not only America’s Independence Day but also the enduring and expanding partnership between Pakistan and the United States.
Reflecting on the principles that shaped the United States 250 years ago, Sanders said the Declaration of Independence established the ideals of equality, self-governance, and the fundamental rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. He emphasized that lasting international relationships are built through shared opportunities and mutual progress.
“The relationship between Pakistan and the United States is strongest when it creates opportunities for the people of both countries,” he said.
Sanders also recalled attending the launch of the America 250 celebrations at the US Embassy in Islamabad alongside Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He said the United States will continue organizing commemorative events throughout the year to celebrate democratic values and the historic milestone.
Quoting US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker, Sanders described Pakistan as “a true strategic partner, not merely a transactional one, but a partner grounded in mutual respect, aligned interests, and a shared vision for security and prosperity.”
Highlighting the collaboration between NIT and Arizona State University, Sanders said the partnership represents the excellence of American higher education while supporting Pakistan’s vision of developing a highly skilled, innovation-driven workforce. He noted that the collaboration is equipping students with world-class knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy.
The US diplomat also welcomed NIT’s launch of the Future Innovators Scholarship, calling it a fitting tribute to America’s 250th anniversary. He said the initiative will support approximately 250 outstanding students over the next ten years, with each recipient receiving four years of fully funded education at NIT.
Describing the scholarship program as a meaningful investment in Pakistan’s future, Sanders said it will nurture talent, encourage innovation, and expand educational opportunities for deserving students across the country.
Congratulating NIT on the landmark initiative, he thanked Chancellor Shahzeb Awan, faculty members, students, parents, and guests for making the celebration memorable.

Earlier, welcoming participants, NIT Chancellor Shahzeb Awan said it was a privilege to host the celebration commemorating the 250th Independence Day of the United States. He noted that the occasion carries special significance as America celebrates 250 years of freedom while Pakistan prepares to mark nearly 80 years of independence on August 14.
Awan said the two milestones symbolize the deepening friendship between Pakistan and the United States and reflect the growing cooperation between the two nations in education, technology, innovation, and human development.
He warmly welcomed Consul General Stetson Sanders and thanked him for joining the event, expressing hope that guests would enjoy meaningful discussions, memorable moments, and NIT’s renowned hospitality.
Announcing the Future Innovators Scholarship, Awan said the program has been launched in the spirit of America’s 250 years of independence and will provide 250 scholarships to exceptionally talented young Pakistanis with the potential to become future innovators, entrepreneurs, and national leaders.
He said the initiative is not only a tribute to America’s historic journey but also a reflection of NIT’s unwavering commitment to expanding access to quality education, fostering innovation, and empowering the next generation of Pakistani youth.
