ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Judicial Council has unanimously rejected all complaints filed against Chief Justice of Pakistan, Yahya Afridi, clearing him of alleged misconduct.
Five complaints had been lodged by lawyers from Peshawar, Lahore, Karachi, and two citizens from Vehari, raising various allegations of misconduct.
The first complaint, filed in 2016 by Peshawar High Court lawyer Sibghatullah Shah, accused Afridi of overlooking merit in the appointment of Additional Session Judges during his tenure at the Peshawar High Court. The Council unanimously dismissed this claim.
Another complaint, submitted by Karachi resident Amjad Hussain Durani, alleged that Chief Justice Afridi dismissed a case in the Supreme Court without hearing it. This complaint was also unanimously rejected by the Council.
The Supreme Court released a summary of the Council’s proceedings held on May 14, affirming the Chief Justice’s integrity in handling judicial matters.
It is recalled that that Justice Yahya Afridi had taken oath as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) in October 2024.
He had been administered the oath of office by President Asif Ali Zardari and will remain the CJP for three years till Oct 26, 2027.
Justice Afridi was nominated by a Special Parliamentary Committee (SPC), which was formed under the recently legislated 26th Amendment.
