OTTAWA – The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued a public advisory urging individuals to carefully consider before marrying someone and sponsoring them for immigration to Canada.
The advisory, shared on X, highlighted red flags that may indicate a potential scam, including quick marriages, limited background information, and multiple prior marriages or common-law relationships.
IRCC cautioned against “relationships of convenience,” in which the primary purpose of a marriage or common-law partnership is to facilitate immigration.
It warned that such arrangements are illegal, and sponsors or applicants involved in these relationships may face criminal charges.
Think carefully before marrying someone and sponsoring them to come to Canada, especially if:

“Our officers are trained to recognize genuine applications and detect false marriages or common-law relationships,” the advisory stated. Officers use interviews, document verification, and other measures to identify potential marriage fraud.
The IRCC advised prospective sponsors to avoid scams and familiarize themselves with the rules and responsibilities of sponsoring a spouse to ensure compliance with Canadian immigration laws.
