KARACHI – Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi experienced heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, breaking records for April and worsening the infrastructure issues across the city.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said Karachi recorded 38.6 mm of rain in past 24 hours, surpassing the previous 1985 record of 37 mm in a single day.
Karachi Weather Update Today
While the PMD has said no heavy rain is expected today, light showers and drizzle may occur in some areas, with western wind systems affecting the southeast until April 4.
Overnight, rain continued across multiple neighborhoods, including Airport, Shah Faisal, Malir, Gulistan-e-Johar, Liaquatabad, New Karachi, Jahangir Road, Gurumandir, University Road, Northern Bypass, Garden, Surjani Town, and Orangi Town. Hail was reported in some areas.
Rain Disrupts Life Across Karachi
The heavy rains disrupted life across the city. Streets and roads, including main arteries like University Road and areas such as Liaquatabad and Gulshan-e-Iqbal, were submerged.
Motorcycles and cars got trapped in water-filled potholes, while the Red Line and Karimabad underpass became dangerous zones.
Stormwater drainage proved inadequate, with overflowing drains and sewage canals compounding the situation.
Power outages were reported in several neighborhoods, and one man died from electrocution in Gulistan-e-Johar, bringing the two-day rainfall-related death toll to seven.
PMD Advisory
The PMD warned that while extreme rainfall is not expected today, residents should remain cautious as the city struggles with flooded streets, clogged drains, and the continuing challenges of poorly managed infrastructure.
