ISLAMABAD – Phone prices continued to skyrocket in Pakistan. All new models come with massive price tag, not because of features, but because of massive import taxes and new registration tax, aka PTA Tax.
High-end Android phones followed the same path, turning into luxury items few could afford. As the official prices climbed out of reach, an underground solution quietly spread through the country.
A shady market of non-PTA phones, unregistered devices imported through back channels, untaxed, unverified, started to flourish. People called it a “shortcut,” a “cheap patch,” a way to experience expensive devices without paying the government’s heavy duties.
PTA Alert
A major nationwide alert has been shared by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), as authorities warn millions of citizens using unregistered mobile phones that their devices could be shut down without warning.
These phones, often sold at cheap prices because no customs duties or taxes are paid on them, have become tempting option for low-income users. But now, what appeared to be a bargain may turn into a costly disaster.
PTA, in its latest official statement, said any unregistered mobile phone can be blocked at ANY time.
According to DIRBS system, only devices officially approved by PTA are allowed to operate on Pakistani mobile networks.
PTA also urged all citizens to immediately check their device status. Dial *#06# to obtain your 15-digit IMEI number. Verify your phone’s status through the PTA website or by sending an SMS to 8484.
The authority has delivered a strong warning “Register your mobile phone before it gets blocked — once it’s blocked, nothing will work!”. Telecom Authority insists that users must register their devices in advance to enjoy uninterrupted connectivity, and that responsible digital citizens should use only PTA-approved devices.
