Sonia, the African elephant at Karachi Safari Park, has been buried within her sanctuary after passing away suddenly. A veterinary team led by Dr. Ghulam Mustafa conducted her post-mortem examination, with Karachi’s Mayor overseeing the process. Dr. Amir Khalil, from the global animal welfare organization Four Paws, monitored the procedure remotely via video link.

Blood and tissue samples have been collected and sent to the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Lahore for analysis. The park officials stated, “The real cause of Sonia’s death will be determined based on the laboratory reports.” The detailed post-mortem report is expected within four weeks. Although there were initial plans for Four Paws to handle the post-mortem, concerns about decomposition led to the procedure being expedited locally.

Park staff discovered Sonia’s lifeless body early in the morning, despite her appearing healthy and eating normally the previous day. Sonia’s death follows the demise of another African elephant, Noor Jehan, earlier this year at Karachi Zoo.
