THE proposal put forward by Surgical Instruments Manufacturers Association (SIMA) to establish a separate industrial estate for the surgical industry is a much-needed and timely initiative that deserves full support. The proposal’s core aim is simple: to concentrate the industry in one dedicated space, ensuring adherence to global standards while unlocking new growth opportunities. This vision has the potential to propel Pakistan into an even stronger position as a leading exporter in this vital industry.

Pakistan is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of surgical tools, catering to both domestic demand and the export market. In fact, nearly 80% of the surgical instruments produced in Pakistan are exported to over 15 countries, with the top three destinations being the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom. This thriving export market highlights the remarkable capacity of our surgical instruments industry. However, to maintain and expand this competitive edge, the sector needs an industrial estate tailored to its specific needs—a dedicated space that fosters innovation, adheres to international quality standards, and facilitates modern production techniques. Establishing a separate industrial estate for surgical instruments would not only streamline the production process but also improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Such a move would ensure that all players in the industry from small-scale manufacturers to large exporters benefit from a shared infrastructure, including access to high-quality raw materials, state-of-the-art facilities, and specialized labour. A dedicated industrial estate would serve as a catalyst for the growth of surgical instrument exports, ultimately contributing to the country’s economic development. What is encouraging about this proposal is the strong support shown by the government. Punjab Minister for Industries and Commerce Chaudhry Shafay Hussain agreed with the necessity of establishing a separate industrial estate, underscoring the significant potential for investment in the surgical instrument manufacturing sector. With the right infrastructure, skilled workforce, and modern production techniques, the industry can expand its footprint in global markets and increase exports even further. We are confident that the promises made by the government will be fulfilled in a timely and effective manner.
