Pakistan’s formerly conjoined twins, who were separated in a successful surgery in Riyadh in 2016, attended the first ever International Conference on Separation of Conjoined Twins hosted by Saudi Arabia.

The twin sisters – Mishaal and Fatima – are visiting the kingdom along with their parents. They were conjoined below the chest and abdomen, sharing the chest, liver, and outer membrane of the heart.

Under the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, their successful separation surgery was performed on March 28, 2016, at King Abdullah Specialist Hospital for National Guard in Riyadh.

The twins underwent a six-stage surgery that took about seven hours. The medical team consisted of 20 doctors and specialists.

Meanwhile, the first session of conference took place on November 25, and delved into the 35-year journey of conjoined twins in Saudi Arabia, exploring topics such as the embryology of conjoined twins, establishing a multidisciplinary team, prenatal and postnatal care, and pre-separation care for conjoined twins.

Experts presented discussions on topics such as multimodal imaging for surgical planning in cranial twin separations, radiological assessments of conjoined twins, and managing cardiovascular malformations in such cases.
