K-Electric’s Bin Qasim Power Station II (BQPS-II) received global recognition at the Asian Power Awards 2024, securing two prestigious titles: Gas Power Project of the Year – Pakistan and Power Plant Upgrade of the Year – Pakistan. These awards underscore K-Electric’s ongoing efforts to modernize Pakistan’s power generation sector, particularly through investments in high-efficiency and resilient energy solutions.

The 560 MW BQPS-II facility, part of K-Electric’s $4 billion post-privatization investment, underwent substantial upgrades that have enhanced its performance and efficiency. Key advancements included modifications to accommodate Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) as a secondary fuel option and improvements in auxiliary load requirements, increasing the plant’s net efficiency.

As aZresult, BQPS-II has gained greater operational flexibility to meet Karachi’s growing electricity demands, positioning it as a leader in sustainable energy generation within Pakistan. The Asian Power Awards are highly esteemed in the energy sector, celebrating innovation and sustainability in power generation across Asia.

K-Electric’s awards placed it among prominent global players like Dubai Electric and Water Authority (DEWA) and China Resources Power Holding Company, showcasing the utility’s dedication to transformative power solutions on par with international standards. Abbas Husain, K-Electric’s Chief Generation & Transmission Officer, expressed pride in the recognition: “It’s an honor to be recognized alongside notable international power sector players. We continue to explore ways to push the envelope of innovation, adapting to ensure reliable and economical power supply to customers.

While the costs of electricity charged to customers are a federal subject, we want to leverage our resources to bring in more efficiency and reduce the cost of production while enhancing the available electricity supply. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in power generation and distribution.” Beyond its work with BQPS-II, K-Electric is progressing on other ambitious projects.
