The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) hosted a seminar focused on promoting awareness of human rights laws and protections. Chairperson Iqbal Ahmed Detho led the event, highlighting key legal provisions in place to protect human rights across Sindh. He also provided an overview of SHRC’s efforts to uphold these rights, emphasizing the need for stronger implementation at the grassroots level. During an interactive session, attendees—including social workers, journalists, advocates, and members of various communities—raised concerns about ongoing human rights challenges and called for decisive legal action to address these issues. Detho acknowledged that while Sindh has enacted comprehensive human rights legislation covering child labor, early marriages, domestic violence, and the Hindu Marriage Registration Act, there remains a gap in awareness and enforcement, especially at the district level. “Officials often lack knowledge on how to prevent human rights violations or identify the relevant laws for action,” he noted. In efforts to bridge this gap, SHRC is actively engaging with students, social workers, journalists, and diverse community groups to understand local concerns and bring them to light. Detho shared plans for training judiciary and law enforcement officials, which will empower them to tackle human rights issues effectively at the district level. As part of its ongoing initiatives, SHRC has opened an office in Larkana and requested the Sindh government to appoint a retired session judge as a member for the office. This judge would conduct visits to health and educational institutions, ensuring that local-level grievances are addressed.
