The Italian Carrier Strike Group (ICSG), consisting of the aircraft carrier CGS Cavour and the frigate ITS Alpino, docked in Karachi from October 14 to 16, 2024, marking a significant milestone as the first operational deployment of an Italian carrier in the Indo-Pacific region. Upon arrival, Ambassador H.E. Marilina Armellin welcomed Commander Commodore Giancarlo Ciappina and the crew at a ceremony organized by the Pakistan Navy at Karachi harbor.

The event was attended by notable figures, including Danilo Giurdanella, the Consul General of Italy, and Colonel Enrico Rosa, the Italian Defence Attaché, alongside officials from Pakistan’s naval authorities. In a bid to strengthen ties between the two nations, a ‘Defence Industry Forum’ was hosted on board the ITS Alpino. This event aimed to enhance collaboration between the Italian and Pakistani defence sectors, organized in conjunction with the Secretariat General of Defence and the Federation of Italian Companies for Aerospace, Defence and Security (AIAD).

Ambassador Armellin and Rear Admiral Stefano Barbieri engaged in high-level discussions with the Pakistan Navy, including meetings with Commander Pakistan Fleet and Commander Karachi. These talks underscored Italy’s commitment to expanding cooperation beyond military matters, incorporating diplomatic, economic, and technological dimensions. Later, a media briefing held on the Cavour provided an opportunity for Pakistani journalists to engage with the Italian delegation. The visit culminated in a reception hosted on the aircraft carrier, featuring Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, and various dignitaries from the government and business community.

The historic docking not only signifies Italy’s increased naval engagement in the Indo-Pacific but also reflects a commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with Pakistan. Over the years, both countries have collaborated on promoting maritime security and international cooperation in the region. Following the visit, representatives from Italian defense firms, including LEONARDO and Fincantieri, toured the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works, discussing potential future collaborations.
