LAHORE – The government of Punjab enforced Section 144, banning public gatherings, days after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf announced region-wide protests.

To unwanted any untoward incidents, several cities in Punjab including Multan, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Vehari, Pakpattan, Okara, and Wazirabad saw imposition of colonial-era law that restricted all kinds of public gatherings.

Section 144 was imposed to avoid new orders comes to thwart sit-ins, rallies, and agitation in the region, Home Department said at requests from local district administrations amid rising security concerns.

As per the announcement, Section 144 will remain imposed in these Punjab cities till October 12. Residents are also advised to avoid any gatherings amid security concerns.

Punjab government reiterated to hold law and order and ensuring the safety of citizens and their property.

What is Section 144?

Section 144 allows regional authorities to prohibit the assembly of four or more people in an area to maintain public order. The decades-old legislation is still used during times of unrest or potential violence to prevent disturbances and ensure safety.

Political activists or citizens who violate this order can face jail time and heavy fine.
