It is a great honour for me to welcome the participants of the International Maritime Symposium (IMS) 2024. The theme, “Realisation of Blue Economy through the Prism of Sustainable Development Goals: Options for Developing Countries, including Pakistan” reflects our shared vision for a sustainable future. Pakistan recognises that international cooperation and constructive dialogue are essential to achieving these goals.
The Blue Economy offers developing nations like Pakistan a unique opportunity to responsibly harness maritime resources while ensuring environmental sustainability. It is not only an economic necessity but also a crucial path to social equity and resilience against climate change. By embracing ecosystem-based management and interdependent economic principles, we can mitigate challenges while empowering vulnerable coastal communities.
A sustainable Blue Economy fosters economic growth, job creation and food security by promoting sectors such as fisheries, shipping, tourism and renewable energy. For developing countries, it offers the chance to utilise marine assets equitably and sustainably. However, challenges like climate change, marine pollution and overfishing threaten our oceans’ health, warranting innovative and collaborative solutions.
Pakistan is committed to advancing maritime governance through partnerships and capacity-building initiatives that enhance skills and knowledge. By working with other developing states, we aim to implement frameworks that promote sustainable maritime practices.
I am confident this symposium will drive actionable strategies that empower developing nations, including Pakistan. By leveraging innovation, sharing experiences and strengthening international partnerships, we can align our efforts with the Sustainable Development Goals and navigate towards a prosperous maritime future.
I commend the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) for their efforts in organising this important event. NIMA’s dedication to fostering collaboration in the maritime sector is invaluable in addressing the challenges ahead. I wish all participants a productive and inspiring symposium as we work together to secure a brighter, sustainable future.
