MIRPUR – Universities in Pakistan are known for conservative dress codes in light of social norms and now the University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir restricted T-shirts and Jeans for male, female students.

A notification issued by AJK University directed students and staff to dress according to cultural and religious values. As per the new rules, female students and staff members are directed to wear shalwar qameez with a dupatta or gown.

For males, there will be ban on Jeans and only dress pants will be allowed along with collared shirt or shalwar qameez.  AJKU said dress code aimed to bring discipline and respect for traditions.

Shorts or sleeveless tops Shorts and sleeveless shirts are not allowed.
Provocative or offensive language/art on T-shirts/dresses Clothing with language or art that may be deemed provocative or likely to offend others.
Torn clothing Clothing that is ripped or torn.
Workout or athletic wear during classes Jogging or exercise clothing is not permitted during classes.
Excessive makeup or expensive jewelry Avoid wearing too much makeup or expensive jewelry.
Untidy, flashy, or immodest outfits  Clothing that is messy, overly flashy, or inappropriate for these settings.
Unprofessional attire for formal events and interviews Avoid clothing that is not suitable for formal programs and interviews.
Attention-drawing clothing, accessories, hairstyles, body markings, or piercings Clothing and accessories should not attract unnecessary attention.
Explicit clothing Outfits that are explicitly inappropriate are not allowed.
Sunglasses indoors Sunglasses are allowed but must be removed when inside.
Hair must be clean and styled appropriately; long hair must be tied back Hair should be clean and styled to avoid drawing attention; long hair should be tied back.
Bare feet Bare feet are not permitted.

These reforms aimed to promote positive image of university, and students and staff members are advised to consult the varsity’s official communications and adhere to the newly established dress standards.
