RECENT months have brought a troubling surge in terrorist attacks across the country with August 2024 witnessing a significant increase to 59 incidents from the previous month’s 38. In this challenging landscape, the reaffirmation of commitment by Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the Director General ISPR is reassuring for the nation. Addressing a press conference, the DG ISPR detailed the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts of the Pakistani military, highlighting the completion of 32,173 intelligence-based operations this year alone. These operations have been instrumental in neutralizing threats, with nearly 4,000 carried out in the past month, resulting in the death of 90 militants.
The military’s dedication is further exemplified by the sacrifice of 193 soldiers who laid down their lives in this relentless struggle. Their valour and commitment resonate deeply with the nation, as we honour their sacrifice and stand in solidarity with their grieving families. The track record of our armed forces in combating terrorism is commendable. The same battle-hardened personnel who have previously achieved notable victories against terrorists are once again at the forefront of this struggle. Their expertise and resilience are vital assets in the fight against the menace, and there is no doubt that they will once again succeed in delivering a decisive blow to the terrorists. At the same time, it is equally important for law enforcement agencies to be equipped and trained to handle such threats effectively. The enhancement of their capacity through comprehensive training programs and the provision of necessary equipment is imperative. Strengthening these agencies will bolster their ability to support military operations and address terrorism. Additionally, effective engagement with Afghan authorities remains a key factor in addressing cross-border terrorism. It is essential for the government to work closely with Afghanistan to encourage actionable measures against the terrorist elements that threaten both nations. A coordinated approach will enhance efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and ensure greater regional stability.
