LAHORE – Senior journalist, columnist, and former bureaucrat Orya Maqbool Jan has been remanded to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for four physical remand after his arrest in his social media posts concerning the Mubarak Sani case.
The former TV show person was detained by FIA’s cybercrime wing at their Gulberg office in provincial capital, his legal team said, and was later brought before the court.
Orya’s lawyer argued that FIA’s accusations were unfounded and unsupported by evidence. He requested that the court dismiss the case.
FIA’s investigation officer claimed that the accusations were valid and that Jan had been uncooperative, stating that they had strong evidence against him for inciting hatred among people. During court proceeding, Orya tola court that he already provided FIA with his social media account passwords.
Mubarak Sani Case
Islamabad saw huge gatherings of right wing parties as Supreme Court heard a plea from the Punjab government challenging its July 24 ruling in the Mubarak Sani case.
The plea stated that the constitutional right to religious freedom is subject to law, morality, and public order. It was filed by Punjab prosecutor general, the application was quickly set for hearing before a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, along with Justices Irfan Saadat Khan and Naeem Akhtar Afghan.
It said observations in the judgment appeared to be accidental errors, inconsistent with the cited precedents.S
Several parties attempted to breach Supreme Court security, demanding the withdrawal of the Mubarak Sani case verdict. Police also intervened with baton charges and tear gas to prevent the protesters from reaching the court. Earlier, the demonstrators had gathered at Express Chowk, where they set up a stage with a sound system for speeches.
Meanwhile, capital police registered a case against over 6,000 protesters for entering the Red Zone. The case was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) at the Secretariat police station, based on a police complaint. Seven individuals were named in the FIR, while the rest remained unidentified.
