RAWALPINDI – Zafar Iqbal, the former Deputy Superintendent of Adiala Jail, who was arrested on charges of allegedly facilitating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan during his incarceration, has been released from custody.
The reliable sources said that Zafar Iqbal was taken into custody on August 13 for interrogation regarding his involvement in aiding Imran Khan while he was imprisoned at Adiala Jail. After days of questioning, Iqbal returned to his residence near Adiala Jail late last night.
The investigation into the alleged facilitation of the PTI leader has widened, with authorities probing two additional officials from Adiala Jail.
Both former Deputy Superintendent Zafar Iqbal and an Assistant Warden have been under scrutiny.
The officers were reportedly residing in close proximity to Muhammad Akram, another former Deputy Superintendent of Adiala Jail.
On August 14, Muhammad Akram was also detained by authorities under allegations of acting as a conduit for messages and providing assistance to Imran Khan during his detention.
Akram had served at Adiala Jail for over 15 years.
In response to Akram’s detention, his wife has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court seeking his release. She stated that there has been no information about her husband’s whereabouts since August 14, despite filing a request with the Sadar Bairuni Police Station. She also mentioned that no formal case has been registered against him.
The Lahore High Court has taken notice of the matter and issued a directive to the police, demanding a response by August 20 regarding the situation.
