ISLAMABAD – The first case of monkeypox in Pakistan has been reported in person who arrived in KP from a Gulf state.

In a statement, the Ministry of National Health mentioned the first suspected case of monkeypox also known as Mpox – an infectious disease that can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes, and fever.

The ministry spokesperson said KP resident returned from Gulf country, with active signs of monkeypox. Samples have been collected and sent for testing to confirm the diagnosis of the viral infection.

It said the individual is having mild symptoms of the contagious disease, while authorities are conducting contact tracing and testing those who were in close contact.

All regions have been directed to assign focal points for monkeypox and directed Border Health Services to intensify screening at all entry points.

Monkeypox Global Outbreak & WHO Warning

Amid rising cases of virus, World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox in Africa a global health emergency. There are over 14,000 cases reported last year, while over 500 people died mostly in Congo as potentially more transmissible strain of the virus has emerged, raising concerns of further spread across borders.

Mpox, related to smallpox, typically causes mild symptoms but can result in serious rashes and lesions. African authorities also declared mpox a public health emergency due to a sharp rise in cases across 13 African nations.

The new strain of Monkeypox is particularly concerning as it is harder to detect and may spread more easily. Children under 15 in Congo are disproportionately affected, making up the majority of cases and deaths.
