DUBAI – The International Cricket Council (ICC) board members voiced their dissatisfaction with various aspects of the T20 World Cup 2024 ’s management, particularly concerning the financial and operational matters.
Financial concerns raised
The reports showed that the ICC board meeting would address important questions related to the World Cup 2024’s financial oversight.
An additional $20 million was allocated for the World Cup matches held in the USA for which the ICC had set up a separate independent company to manage the events.
It was revealed that this company requested $20 million beyond the approved budget, a move that raised eyebrows among the board members. A board director disclosed that this amount was sought as a loan for cash payments.
Budget allocation and expenditures
The report outlined that a budget of $45 million was earmarked for the T20 World Cup 2024 matches in the USA. Out of this, $15 million was allocated for operational costs and $30 million was designated for the construction of Nassau Stadium.
Operational issues and empty stadiums
The board members are also concerned about the high budget and the underwhelming attendance at matches.
The questions would be raised regarding the empty stadiums and poor pitch conditions observed during the matches held in the West Indies.
Scheduling concerns
The scheduling of matches in the West Indies during the morning hours, primarily to cater to the Indian broadcast market, also came under scrutiny.
The West Indies, being the main host of the World Cup, would face questions from the board members during the upcoming meeting.
Coordination lapses
Moreover, the report pointed out a lack of coordination between the local organizing committees of the West Indies and the USA. It caused complication to the event’s management.
