ISLAMABAD – Escalating its actions against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the federal government decided to ban the former ruling party.
The government also announced to file references against PTI founder Imran Khan and former president Arif Alvi for treason under Article 6.
“Pakistan and PTI cannot go side by side,” said Tarar while addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Monday (today).
The Minister said that the federal government would petition the apex court to ban the party.
This development took place after the indictment of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi in cases related to the May 9 riots and the arrest of Imran Khan for incidents on that day.
Referring to the period when the then-government chose to dissolve the assemblies during the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan, the minister said the ruling alliance also decided to submit a reference against the former prime minister, former president Arif Alvi, and former National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri.
He stated that this reference, under Article 6, would be sent to the Supreme Court following the cabinet’s approval.
According to Tarar, these decisions were made in response to the former ruling party’s alleged involvement in the May 9 events and attempts by PTI’s former or current leaders to undermine Pakistan’s deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
