PESHAWAR – Authorities have decided to suspend mobile phone service on Muharram 9 and 10 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa capital city of Peshawar due to security reasons amid Ashura processions.

Peshawar’s Capital City Police Officer Qasim Ali told a private news channel that mobile phone signals will be suspended for two days to ensure foolproof security during this period.

He said the decision has been taken to prevent any untoward incidents during these days as processions and special gatherings are held across Pakistan, including Peshawar, to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain.

Meanwhile, the federal government has announced public holidays on Muharram 9 and 19 (July 16 and 17) on the account of Ashura 2024.

The government has issued a notification in this regard.

The first day of new Hijri year 1446 was observed on Monday, July 8 Monday.

Members of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, representatives from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Department of Meteorology, SUPARCO, and the Ministry of Science and Technology attended the meeting in Quetta. Simultaneously, provincial and district moon sighting committees conducted their meetings at their respective headquarters.
