The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has expressed grave concerns over the escalating threats and violence targeting journalists in the region following the tragic death of senior journalist NasrullahGadani. Gadani succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained in an attack by unidentified assailants near MirpurMathelo, Ghotki district. The SHRC emphasizes the urgent need for the implementation of “The Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Act, 2021,” designed to safeguard journalists’ safety and protection.
The commission urges the Government of Sindh to take immediate and effective actions to implement the provisions of this Act. Under Section 4(ii) of the Sindh Protection of Human Rights Act, 2011, the SHRC issues the following urgent recommendations:
The government must rigorously enforce Sections 6 and 7 of the Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Act, 2021, to guarantee the safety and protection of journalists and media personnel across Sindh. A thorough and impartial investigation into the murder of Mr. NasrullahGadani must be conducted, as mandated by Section 4(i) of the Sindh Protection of Human Rights Act, 2011. Justice must be served to Mr. Gadani’s family, and those involved in the case must be safeguarded against any form of harassment or intimidation. The SHRC stands in solidarity with journalists and media practitioners in Sindh, reaffirming its commitment to protecting human rights and upholding a free and independent press.
