The National Accountability Bureau has taken the initiative to introduce major changes in its standard operating procedures (SOPs) concerning parliamentarians’ arrest and interrogation.
Under these revised procedures, in case of any complaints against a member of the parliament, the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairman of the Senate will be notified.
Furthermore, members of parliament will not be detained during the inquiry process as mere allegations will not suffice for the arrest of the parliamentarians.
The sources said the violation of these SOPs by officials could result in imprisonment of up to one year and a fine of one million rupees.
The sources said NAB has sought assistance from the Speaker of the National Assembly to formalize these new SOPs into law.
