Narcotics challenge

The nation faces a mounting challenge of drug addiction, with a noticeable increase in drug-related deaths, especially among the youth. Last year alone, 560 addicts lost their lives, highlighting the severity of the issue. It’s not limited to any particular social group, with even middle and upper-income individuals affected. Dangerous substances like crystal meth are becoming increasingly popular among the youth, indicating the urgent need for action.

Pakistan’s present is already riddled with enough problems, but this havoc will impair the future of our nation if not addressed as a threat to our collective well-being. Commendable efforts have been made by CM Maryam Nawaz, but a forceful and intensified campaign against both users and sellers is the need of the hour. Narcotics are not only hazardous for individual lives; drug addiction can easily permeate into the broader socio-economic landscape of the country.

Right next to the rising unemployment rates we have seen in recent years, drug use is one of the biggest catalysts for the surge in criminal activities across the nation. The lucrative nature of drug peddling does not just feed crime but acts as fuel for terrorism and militant activities in border regions where these substances often originate as well. There is a strong link between drug trafficking and our security threats, and as part of our anti-terror operations in the country, this is an important avenue we need to take into account.

The nexus between drug peddling and militancy is mainly dependent on the finance that the former provides, so eradicating the peddling will go a long way in addressing both issues. This battle must be waged on multiple fronts, the relentless pursuit of a drug-free society is a never-ending battle for most nations around the globe, but we cannot let this deter us. Safeguarding our future generations is the best chance we have to rebuild and transform our nation.

Eid Mubarak to PO readers

EID-ul-Fitr, the festive culmination of Ramadan, symbolizes profound gratitude to the Almighty for the blessings bestowed upon believers during the holy month. This jubilant occasion is celebrated globally, uniting Muslims in prayer, fellowship and acts of compassion.

As the dawn breaks on Eid morning, Muslims flock to mosques for the congregational Eid prayer, adorned in new attire that reflects the joyous spirit of the day. Following the prayers, greetings and embraces are exchanged among worshippers, regardless of acquaintance, fostering a sense of unity and brotherhood. The day unfolds with visits to the homes of friends and less fortunate members of the community, where gifts are exchanged as tokens of happiness and goodwill.

Ramadan’s rigorous fasting regimen not only cultivates empathy for the hungry and needy but also serves as a spiritual journey, deepening believers’ connection with the Creator. The transformative power of fasting is evident as individuals emerge from Ramadan reformed, purified and spiritually enriched. Through devoted reflection on the Qur’an and conscientious efforts toward righteousness, believers strive for continuous spiritual growth, even as Eid dawns.

Rooted in the tradition of the Last Prophet’s first Eid celebration in 624 AD, Eid is a time for cherished traditions of familial bonds, communal gatherings and the sharing of meals. Delicacies like ‘sheer khurma,’ a warm vermicelli milk dessert and savory biryanis grace the tables, symbolizing the culmination of a month-long fast. Across borders and cultures, Eid festivities are characterized by the warmth of hospitality and the joy of communal feasting.

As the new moon heralds the arrival of Eid, Muslims worldwide come together in celebration, transcending geographical boundaries and cultural differences. It’s a time to reaffirm faith, strengthen bonds and extend wishes of ‘Eid Mubarak’ to all Muslim brothers and sisters, both in Pakistan and beyond. May this auspicious occasion bring peace, joy, and blessings to all.

Trade not aid

Pakistan’s economic vulnerability persists despite its location between world-leading economies like China and India. While both Pakistan and India receive aid and loans, India’s robust GDP shields it from the effects of reduced financial support. India’s growing economy makes Western countries reliant on it, evidenced by significant military deals with the USA.

However, the West sees India differently from China and Russia, often viewing Pakistan solely through the lens of Afghanistan. Pakistan’s reliance on loans from institutions like the IMF and World Bank has diminished its global standing, echoing Fyodor Dostoevsky’s sentiment that poverty isn’t a vice, but begging is. This perpetual dependence erodes morale and hinders efforts towards self-reliance.

Unlike Pakistan, India thrives on exports, notably to Saudi Arabia and Dubai, showcasing its economic prowess. Weak democracy, terrorism, governance issues and rampant corruption exacerbate Pakistan’s financial woes. From elites to the middle class, self-interest often trumps national welfare, perpetuating the cycle of dependency and economic decline.
