In a commendable joint effort, Medical Emergency Resilience Foundation (MERF), in partnership with UNICEF and the Sindh Health Department, has launched a proactive initiative to address pressing health and immunization needs in flood-affected areas of Thatta and Sujawal districts. This collaborative endeavor, supported by the Government of Sindh, aims to deliver vital healthcare services to vulnerable communities.

During a press briefing at the Thatta Press Club, MERF’s regional program officer, Dr. Zinab, and regional coordinator, Adam Malk, outlined the impactful progress of the initiative. Over 8,000 children diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) have received essential treatment, alongside screening for malnutrition and referral of pregnant and lactating women for vital antenatal and postnatal care, surpassing initial targets.

The initiative’s scope also includes routine immunizations for over 2,000 children and Tetanus Toxoid (TT) vaccines for more than 1,000 pregnant women. Moreover, nearly 25,000 caregivers have benefited from informative sessions on key family care practices, emphasizing holistic health and well-being.

Focused primarily on selected Union Councils (UCs) in Thatta and Sujawal districts, including areas like Karampur, Mehar, Udasi, and Kharochhan in Thatta, and UC Jhungo Jalbani, UC Goongani, and UC Kotri in Sujawal, this initiative aims to significantly reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality rates, aligning with sustainable development goals.

MERF’s commitment to promoting health equity and resilience among marginalized communities underscores the organization’s pivotal role in addressing healthcare disparities and fostering sustainable development.
