As always is the case, prices of food items haveincreased sharply across the country in the holy month of Ramadan as thegovernment has failed to rein in profiteers who are selling these itemsat the rates of their choice.The situation is no different in Karachi where prices of vegetables haveskyrocketed.
Onion is being sold in the market at the rate of Rs220 per kilo, whichis Rs50 per kilo higher than the rate fixed by the government.Commissioner Karachi had fixed the rate at Rs170 per kilo.Similarly, the price of one kilo of potatoes in the market rangesbetween Rs40 and Rs60, while per kilo of tomatoes costs between Rs50 andRs80.Likewise, the government rate of a carrot is Rs25 per kilo, while it isbeing sold in the market at prices ranging between Rs30 per kilo andRs60 per kilo.Peas are being sold at prices ranging between Rs130 per kilo and Rs150per kilo.Contrary to the government rate of Rs236 per kilo, ladyfinger isavailable at Rs250 per kilo.
Likewise, as per the list of prices issued by the government, the priceof garlic is Rs598 per kilo, while it is being sold at Rs640 per kilo.Similarly, the government rate of ginger is 495 per kilo, while it isbeing sold in the market at Rs640 per kilo.The government had fixed the rate of lemon at Rs368 per kilo, while inthe market its price has soared to Rs480 per kilo.
