ISLAMABAD – Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja has accepted the nomination papers submitted by PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari for the presidential election.

CEC, who is acting as returning office for the election, approved the papers after completing the scrutiny process. Asif Ali Zardari had submitted his nomination papers in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The Sunni ittehad Council (SIC) has nominated Mehmood Khan Achakzai for the post of the president of Pakistan.

The election for the slot will be held on March 9. According to the Constitution of Pakistan, the electoral college comprising the Senate, the National Assembly of Pakistan, and the Provincial Assemblies of the four provinces will elect the president.

The new president will replace the Dr Arif Alvi, who was elected to the post after the PTI formed the government in Centre, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
