Experts in Pakistan are stressing the importance of addressing the system constraints in the country’s ambitious plans for renewable energy, to effectively tackle the challenges posed by the sector’s growth. During a webinar titled “Emerging Trends in Pakistan’s Renewable Energy Sector:

Charting the Agenda for 2030 and Beyond,” organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute in Karachi, participants reached a consensus on the need to focus on mitigating the volume of unserved energy and accommodating the intermittency of renewable energy.

Speakers highlighted the current challenges in the power sector and emphasized the necessity of modernizing the grid alongside the integration of renewable energy sources. Sadia Dada, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at K-Electric, provided insights into KE’s Investment Plan, which has been submitted to the regulator. The plan outlines KE’s strategies to enhance transmission and distribution capacity, preparing it to incorporate approximately 1200 MW of renewable energy by FY 2030 under the Power Acquisition Programme (PAP).

Dada emphasized that these initiatives align with national targets set forth in the Indicative Generation Capacity Expansion Plan (IGCEP), focusing on long-term, cost-effective strategies for sustainable power generation while considering prevailing policies and technical and socio-economic factors.
