Maryam Nawaz’s election as Punjab CM: Number game in provincial legislature

LAHORE – Maryam Nawaz, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior vice-president, is all set to become the first chief minister of Punjab as her party secured a clear majority in the provincial legislature.

The PML-N obtained 133 out of 100 seats in Punjab, 23 independent candidates also joined it and thus the elected numbers of the PML-N is 160.

Besides it, the PML-N secured 36 seats for women and 5 seats for minorities, thus combining the reserved seats, the Muslim League (N) is ahead in the Punjab Assembly with 201 members.

For a simple majority in the Punjab Assembly, the support of 186 members is required. The Muslim League (N) has the support of 14 members of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), 10 of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and six of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).

Thus, the PML-N has the highest number in the Punjab Assembly with 230 members.

There are total 116 PTI-backed independent candidates in the provincial assembly.

Ataullah Tarar, the PML-N senior leader, claimed that they have a clear majority of 210 members.

In an informal conversation with journalists outside the Punjab Assembly, Ataullah Tarar said that under the leadership of Maryam Nawaz, the public welfare projects in Punjab would be completed and the inflation would go down.

Azma Bukhari, another PML-N leader, claimed that the party’s chief organizer Maryam Nawaz would be the first female chief minister of Pakistan.

Azma  said that Maryam Nawaz possesses all the qualities and she will be elected as Prime Minister from the Punjab Assembly based on her abilities.
