LAHORE – Mian Aslam Iqbal, the nominee of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for the position of Punjab Chief Minister, would attend the Punjab Assembly session on Friday (today).
The other newly elected members backed by the PTI would also attend the session.
However, the strict security arrangements were made as heavy contingents of police and dolphin were deployed all around the building of the provincial legislature.
According to the sources, the PTI leadership decided to take part in the session—which is late from its schedule time of 10:00 am.
The PTI supporters and workers are also expected to get together at Faisal Chowk—the roundabout in front of Punjab Assembly—to lodge protest against the swearing-in ceremony of the new legislators.
The sources said that the entry of the PTI-backed independents seems quite difficult because the PML-N wants a smooth swearing-in ceremony for Maryam Nawaz and its party leaders at the Punjab Assembly.
On Thursday, Punjab Governor Muhammad Balighur Rehman summoned the inaugural session of the Punjab Assembly subsequent to the general elections conducted on February 8.
Sabatin Khan, the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, would administer the oath to the elected representatives, formally inducting them into the legislative body.
Besides it, the timetable for the election of the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the house would also be announced today.
