Maulana’s peace mission
A visit of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam’s (JUI-F) Chief, Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, to Afghanistan has come at a critical time during election campaigns in the country. The meeting of the Maulana with the Supreme Leader of the Taliban, Haibatullah Akhundzada, makes this visit all the more prominent. Some say it was undertaken because Fazl-ur-Rehman was concerned about the security situation and threat in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces where he cannot campaign properly because of the risks involved.
Others assume that owing to the uptick in banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) attacks, the visit was meant to hold a conversation with key Taliban leadership to control this threat that is residing and hiding right inside Afghanistan. Whatever it was, the baseline is the presence of threat of militancy for Pakistan from Afghanistan. This very issue has made relations tense between the two countries. In this context, Maulana’s visit signifies a notable diplomatic effort to address strained relations. Confirming comprehensive talks covering various issues, Maulana has highlighted the positive response from the Taliban leaders and their endorsement of cooperation in multiple fields.
The warm reception of JUI-F’s head in Afghanistan also confirms that there are personalities in Pakistani politics who have the respect of the Taliban and therefore there is a healthy channel of communication that must be utilised to address the difficult issues. Pakistan is heading to elections and at this time, words of support from the neighbouring country would be a good sign. It is hoped that some ice may have melted. If the security situation in the KP and Balochistan improves till the elections, Maulana’s diplomacy might be seen as a win.

As elections draw near, addressing the persistent issue of allegations surrounding the voting system becomes crucial. It is high time for the Election Commission to consider implementing electronic voting machines (EVMs) nationwide. This evolution can significantly enhance the security of our elections, mitigating baseless accusations and ensuring the integrity of the people’s votes.
The routine post-election allegations made by various politicians have become a nationwide concern, causing distress and harassment among supporters. This pervasive issue affects every institution, from local blocks to wards and polling stations. Unfortunately, the lack of attention to this matter has allowed the problem to persist. Therefore, it is imperative to introduce a more secure system that eliminates doubts and ensures the credibility of the electoral process.
The prevalence of unfair allegations contributes to political instability, and if left unaddressed, it can lead to economic instability. Such instability opens the door for external interference in Pakistan’s affairs, tarnishing the country’s image on the international stage.
By embracing electronic voting machines, the Election Commission can instil confidence in the electoral process, fostering a sense of trust among the public. This step is essential not only to curb baseless accusations but also to uphold the stability of both the political and economic spheres, ultimately safeguarding Pakistan’s reputation on the global stage.

Noise pollution
Noise pollution is increasing day by day and it has a negative effect on our mental and physical well-being. Excessive noise from traffic, construction sites, loud music, or even neighbours can be really disruptive. Not only can it lead to stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Studies have even shown that long-term exposure to high levels of noise pollution can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and other health issues.
To cope with noise pollution, it’s important to take steps to reduce its impact on our lives. One way is to create a quiet and peaceful environment in our spaces. You can use sound- absorbing material, like thick curtains, carpets or acoustic panels to absorb and block out the noise. Using earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones can be helpful when you need some peace and quiet.
Finding moments of tranquillity outside of your home is also important. Seek out parks, gardens, or other natural areas where you can escape the noise and enjoy some calmness. Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Engaging in activities like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises can also help us relax and find inner peace amidst the chaos.

Truth and justice always triumphs
The Bilkis Bano tragedy went beyond injustice. It scarred the nation’s soul and mocked the Republic’s constitutional guarantees. The depravity of the offence will never be forgotten. The top court’s decision will hopefully heal the wound inflicted on the nation’s conscience. I am very grateful to the Supreme Court for giving justice to Bilkis Bano whose rapist and murderers were released by the Gujarat government and fed with sweets and adorned with garlands.
The re-arrest of the eleven rapists and murderers is a slap on the face of the Home Minister and the Prime Minister of India who were accused for their complicity in the Gujarat riots. Truth and justice always triumphs!
Apart from delivering justice to the aggrieved party, this decision has also strengthened the faith of the Indian masses in our judiciary. It has undoubtedly established that the rule of law effectively prevails in the biggest democracy in the world.

Polio crisis
As poliovirus continues to afflict Pakistan, its resurgence in regions like Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar, and Sukkur has become a pressing concern. The re-emergence of this virus can be attributed to various factors, including inadequate immunization coverage, exposure to infected faecal matter and insufficient hygiene practices such as poor hand washing. Furthermore, consumption of contaminated food and water also contributes to its spread. Addressing this critical situation requires immediate and concerted efforts, especially from the government. Ensuring free access to polio vaccines for all affected individuals is pivotal in combating the spread of the virus and safeguarding the population.
