PESHAWAR – Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has filed a review plea at Peshawar High Court against the election symbol of the beleaguered Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The development comes days after PHC suspended ECP’s ruling on PTI’s plea. The polls body declared PTI’s intra-party polls unconstitutional and stripped it of its ‘bat’ symbol.

To counter the move, ECP now approached Peshawar High Court (PHC), citing PTI’s ineligibility to contest upcoming elections.

In the review plea, Election Commission urged court review PTI’s intra-party elections and its decision related to the election symbol.

For the unversed, PTI’s intraparty elections, in which Barrister Gohar Khan succeeded Imran Khan as party chairman, were held on December 2 on directives issued by the ECP.

The intra-party elections drew various issues and PTI founding member Akbar S. Babar then challenged the process. He then alleged that PTI carried out selection process aimed at throwing out party workers to give the reins to a few lawyers.

ECP earlier stated that PTI has not complied with directions rendered therein order dated 23rd November, 2023 and failed to hold intra-party election in accordance with PTI prevailing Constitution 2019 and Elections Act 2017, and Election Rules, 2017.

It then said Gohar Ali Khan declared party would approach the PHC or Supreme Court against the ECP decision to deprive the party of its traditional electoral symbol of bat.
