Kashmiri and Pakistani Diaspora groups in the UK have lauded the Scottish National Party (SNP) leader and parliamentarian Alison Thewliss for raising Kashmir question in the British parliament.

Alison Thewliss, MP, asked the British government for its assessment over the Indian kangaroo court, the so-called supreme court decision which backed ending the special status of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The British government replied that it was aware of the Indian top court’s decision. “We continue to discuss with both parties… they need both to resolve that continuing situation and have constructive dialogue with Kashmiris,” Anne-Marie Trevelyan told the parliament in response to Thewliss.

The Kashmir question during the debate in the British parliament came when MP Paul Bristow just chaired a timely conference on the long-pending Kashmir dispute at the British parliament.

According to FahimKayani, President of Tehreek-e-Kashmir, UK, the continuation of debate by British lawmakers is a “must for Kashmir cause of right to self-determination.”

“Kashmiris appreciate MPs Paul Bristow and Alison Thewliss for their conscious advocacy of Kashmir at the parliament,” said Kayani, adding that holding conferences on Kashmir was important to press the British government to “use its influence over India to end illegal occupation in Kashmir.”

The Kashmiri Diaspora leader pointed out that advocacy and lobbying with the British and European lawmakers was an important responsibility of the overseas Kashmiris.

“Our cause and case is genuine and no power on earth can challenge the birth right of Kashmiris,” he added.—INP
