The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in partnership with Bahria University KarachiCampus, the Pakistan Tanners Association, Southern Zone-EnvironmentalSociety (PTA(SZ)-ES), and backed by funding from the Global EnvironmentFacility (GEF), marked a significant milestone in Karachi.This momentous occasion was the certification distribution ceremony forparticipants of the “Women Empowerment in Leather Sector” program.

Theevent celebrated the accomplishments of women in the leather industryand underscored UNIDO’s unwavering dedication to fostering genderequality and empowerment in this vital sector, a press statement saidhere Wednesday.The program, aimed at fostering gender equality and women’s empowermentin the leather industry, offered practical training in key areas such asleather processing, cleaner production techniques, and solid wastemanagement.

The successful participants were awarded certificates ofcompletion during the ceremony.

The event was a testament to the strong partnership between academia andindustry, with Bahria University appreciating the efforts made to bridgethis crucial gap. The university management expressed their intention tofurther explore avenues for collaboration to provide meaningful learningexperiences for students that align with industry demands.Mr. GulzarFiroz, President of PTA(SZ)-ES, highlighted the significanceof the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PTA(SZ)-ES and BahriaUniversity. He mentioned that this program was the second in a series,focusing on empowering women in the leather sector. He also announcedthat the industry is committed to offering employment opportunities toqualified women in their units, thereby solidifying their dedication togender inclusivity.Mr. Ivan Kral, representing UNIDO, expressed his appreciation for thecollaboration between PTA(SZ)-ES and Bahria University.

He highlightedUNIDO’s commitment to offering various learning options, both on-siteand online, to promote a cleaner environment and sustainabledevelopment.The certification distribution ceremony was a celebration of thesuccessful completion of the “Women Empowerment in Leather Sector”program, symbolizing a promising step towards gender equality andsustainable development in the industry.

UNIDO is a specialized agency of the United Nations focusing oninclusive and sustainable industrial development in the developingworld. UNIDO works on different projects that are directly or indirectlyrelated to inclusive and sustainable industrial development, ClimateChange, Trade, etc.In all projects where UNIDO provides technical assistance, it is ensuredthat the project is sustainable and adaptable for the private sector. UNIDO is fully working on its theme of ISID (Inclusive and SustainableIndustrial Development) which refers active participation of women alongwith men in all aspects of Inclusive and Sustainable industrialdevelopment.
