Wasaib Youth Conference has demanded creation of Saraiki province, job quota and establishing higher educational institutions in South Punjab. The demand was put forth by former chairman of Saraiki Students Council while speaking at Wasaib Youth Conference held here at local hotel on Wednesday. Office bearers of Saraiki Students Council, student leaders and activists of the organization attended the conference.
The conference was aimed at gathering students of various universities to make a united and strong demand of Saraiki province and to settle future line of action. Participants of the Wasaib Youth Conference demanded Saraiki province, constitutional fortification for job quota and establishing higher educational institutions in South Punjab.
Addressing the conference, an office bearer of the organization said the matter of the fact is that the provision for job quota was originally based on zoning formula in Punjab under the 1973 Constitution. It was mandated for 20 years. For this purpose, Zone B in Punjab province was constituted, which included Multan, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan divisions and Mianwali and Bakhar districts. However, after the lapse of 20 years, the Article 27 was although again amended in 1997, mainly owing to political pressure of parliamentary representatives from Saraiki region, but it was not actually restored by then PML-N provincial government in Punjab.—INP
