Rubio acknowledges Pakistan’s concerns over terrorism from Afghanistan

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has acknowledged Pakistan’s concerns over terrorist attacks originating from Afghan territory, saying the US does not want Pakistan to become a target of terrorism.

Speaking in Atlanta after the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting, he said Pakistan believed the Afghan Taliban were not doing enough to prevent cross-border attacks.

Rubio’s remarks came as Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting criticised the Taliban leadership for failing to address terrorist activity emanating from Afghanistan.

The ministry said Pakistan would not tolerate terrorist sanctuaries across the border and reserved the right to take necessary measures under international law to protect its national security.

Islamabad has repeatedly urged Kabul to take verifiable action against militant groups, particularly the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Pakistani officials accuse of operating from Afghan territory. The Afghan Taliban deny allowing militants to use their territory to launch attacks against Pakistan.
