Approves Cheema’s removal, okays IB DG appointment
Federal cabinet on Tuesday while declaring President’s role unconstitutional said that Dr Arif Alvi mocked the constitution over the issue of Punjab Governor Omer Sarfraz Cheema.
A meeting of the federal cabinet was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During the meeting, the political affairs of the country were reviewed.
Briefing the Cabinet, it was said that constitutional positions were used to push the country towards anarchy. The President and the Governor of Punjab had insulted the Constitution, law, parliament and democracy and the government used constitutional authority to sack the Punjab governor. The federal cabinet further said that the country could not tolerate political chaos and that the law would make its way against those who attacked the institutions. The federal cabinet also rejected the decision to reject the advice of the Prime Minister by the President Alvi on the issue of Governor Punjab. Meanwhile, the Federal Cabinet also approved the summary to remove Omar Sarfraz Cheema from the Punjab Governor slot.
The cabinet approved the appointment of Fawad Asadullah Khan as permanent director general of the Intelligence Bureau, an officer of grade-21, whose notification had already been issued by the Establishment Division. He was previously posted as Commandant IB Academy. The meeting discussed the current political situation in the country and other matters of importance.
Cabinet members said that a constitutional process was adopted to remove Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema from his post and President Alvi misuse his powers. The cabinet was briefed about the court order details to de-seat Punjab Governor. The cabinet also okayed the resignation of the Wapda Chairman Lt-Gen (rtd) Muzzamil Hussain and now additional charge has been given to the Wapda member finance Naveed Asghar Chaudhry for the period of three months.
