ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Tuesday that the international community has a moral obligation to avert a humanitarian disaster in Afghanistan.

Sharing his remarks on a news item about the catastrophic situation in Afghanistan, the premier said: “I have been warning of this humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan”.

He said that now the World Food Programme has issued alert in this regard. “Pak will continue to provide all possible relief but int community must act now. It has moral obligation to avert this humanitarian disaster confronting Afghan ppl,” he wrote on Twitter.

Experts fear that Afghanistan would face the cute hunger and widespread famine in the looming winter season.

WFP executive director David Beasley while talking to BBC in Kabul on Sunday said that the situation in the war-torn country is “as bad as you possibly can imagine”. “In fact, we’re now looking at the worst humanitarian crisis on Earth.

“Ninety-five percent of the people don’t have enough food, and now we’re looking at 23 million people marching towards starvation,” he added. “The next six months are going to be catastrophic. It is going to be hell on Earth.”

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in mid-August after the West-backed Ashraf Ghani’s government collapsed following the withdrawal of the US-led foreign troops.
