As many as 20 candidates, belonging to different political parties, have submitted nomination papers for the by-election to NA-133 constituency here in the provincial metropolis.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has released the initial list of candidates, who have filed their nominations for the by-election to Lahore’s NA-133.

The national Assembly seat fell vacant due to the demise of PML-N MNA Pervaiz Malik, who was passed away due to a heart attack.

The PML-N has filed Shaista Pervaiz Malik, widow of the deceased MNA Pervez Malik in the constituency and Naseer Bhutta has filed nomination papers as back-up candidate.

Moreover, the PTI’s Jamshed Iqbal Cheema and Musarrat Jamshed have submitted their nominations, while the Pakistan People’s Party has fielded Chaudhry Asalm Gill and Jameel Ahmed as its candidate for the by-election.

Scrutiny of the nomination papers of the candidates will be completed by Oct 30, while the appeals with regard to approval or rejection of the nominations could be filed up to Nov. 03, and will be decided by Nov. 09.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will display the revised list of the candidates on November 10. The candidates could withdraw their nomination papers on Nov. 11.

The final list of candidates will be displayed and election symbols to the candidates will be allotted on Nov. 12. The polling for by-election is scheduled to be held on December 05.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Railways has increased trains fares across the country by 10% from November. The Pakistan Railways notification said that fares for freight trains have been hiked by 5%.

Nazia Jabeen, the department’s spokesperson, told a private V channel that the new rates for passenger and cargo trains will come into effect from November 1 and November 5, respectively.

A 10% increase in fares means that an Rs1,000 ticket will now cost Rs1,100.

A person traveling from Karachi to Lahore in economy class for Rs1,500 will have to purchase the ticket for Rs1,650 from November.

The decision comes amid a price hike of most commodities nationwide. According to the railway department, the increase in fares is a result of the surge in petrol prices.

Earlier this month, the government increased the petrol price by Rs10.49 taking the commodity to a record high of Rs137.79. High-Speed Diesel price has been increased by Rs12.49 to Rs134.48 per litre.
