The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday ordered not to close roads for general traffic during the movement of Cricket team matches.
Justice Shahid Karim of Lahore High Court heard the petition of petitioner Haroon Farooq. Acting CEO Pakistan Cricket Board Sulaiman Naseer, CTO Montazir Mehdi, SP Security Imran Ahmad Malik appeared in the court.
The petitioner’s counsel said that an estimated 15,000 vehicles were stuck in traffic jams at the time of departure of the teams. The court enquired as to on whose request the roads were closed.
The court also summoned the home secretary on October 11, while Judicial Water Commission submitted to the court a report on atmospheric pollution according to which there are six million vehicles in Lahore. “And when one car stops, four pounds of carbon are emitted from it, which adds to the pollution.”
When Justice Shahid Kareem asked counsel for the commission as to on whose orders roads were blocked during matches, he replied, “It is on Home Department orders.”
The CTO said that there was a directive from the Home Department to give zero traffic, the police only follow the directive, we were ordered to do so, the court remarked that we have made great efforts to control environmental pollution in three years.
Now, smog has started again in Lahore, Justice Shahid Karim said that for two days now I myself have been getting humiliated in traffic.
The court was told that a traffic jam produces six million pounds of carbon dioxide.
The court further remarked that we cannot play with the atmosphere of the city like this, SP Security requested that the Home Department be ordered to work in such an event, the court said in an interview with PCB officials.
The court said that the PCB should organize big events but also arrange stay of teams in the hotel near Gaddafi Stadium.
Meanwhile, a Lahore High Court judge, Justice Sohail Nasir has been recovered from Covid-19 as his coronavirus test came out negative.
Justice Nasir will resume his duties from tomorrow and will start hearing cases.
High court judges, lawyers and his relatives and friends congratulated him on his recovery.
The Lahore High Court has released a list of cases that will be heard by Justice Nasir from tomorrow.
He will hear 29 cases in urgent single, 8 cases in urgent division bench and 13 regular cases tomorrow.
